And a little over the edge.

Exercise Machines

I hate exercise machines. Whoever came up with the idea of exercising in the confines of their house, should get out more. The Queen has recently mentioned purchasing another exercise machine. This would not be the first.

Here is my issue with exercise machines:

You spend days or weeks researching the one vessel that will lower your weight and tone your muscles. You finally figure out that the super deluxe off the ground unicycle made of the gold plated wire rim with pulse control, radio, and a seat small enough to be used as an anal probe is the product you need. The cup holder is an extra option that you will also add to the purchase. Hey, it is cheaper than the platinum one. After all, let's not go overboard, who needs platinum?

You empty out your bank account and head to the nearest fitness equipment sales center to purchase it. How nice is it that they will even deliver it for free?

Having received your new gold plated exercise vehicle, you climb aboard and test it out. This is great! The computer explains how much of a fat cow you are and that by peddling only 500 miles a day, you will lose that 14 pounds within the next 8 months. You make a pledge to yourself that you will throw your cheeks on each side of the seat and exercise.

3 weeks later, after battling a sinus headache, you feel that climbing aboard the muscle maximizer may be a bit much. It will have to wait and you can catch up tomorrow.

The following week, you have determined that since you haven't climbed back on the machine in so long you should take it a bit easier and maybe do a couple miles instead of the marathon. You exercise enough to climb a small hill. Tomorrow will be better/easier.

The following day, you are so sore from "working out" that if you try to get on the thing, you are sure you will slip a disc or worse, cry.

The machine is pushed to the corner of the room because you are having a party this weekend and you need the floor space.

That weekend, you ran out of room in the closet and started hanging coats on the handlebars.

Three months later, you think that the monstrocity sitting in the corner of the room is taking up valuable space where you want to place a new piece of furniture. OK. Down to the basement.

The following spring, you figure that since you never use it, you could sell it and get some of the money you sunk into it back. You polish it up so it looks like new and place the $500 tag on it (almost one-third what you paid last year). About one hour before the garage sale is over you drop the price to $200 so you don't have to take it back to the basement and it sells.

Look at that, you made 200 bucks.

Four Months later, you are researching the flexible bow bending systems with the optional cup holder.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Research garage sales. The Queen and the eldest child are especially good at this. Instead of going out and buying the supreme exercise bike from the store, they would much rather have someone else research it and pay much less. When you see something you want, never pay tag price.

This has worked for me in stores as well. I bought my home theater system in Best Buy. The only system I wanted had only one left. The box had a gash in the side and I asked for the manager. The unit was $900.00. It was on sale for $650.00. I combined it with another deal and it was $300.00. After talking with the manager, I walked out with it for $175.00.

This has also been done for cars, meals, and flowers. Everything can be worked down if you are smart about and are bold enough to try.

Did you know...

The biggest selling product in the world is toilet tissue.

Nightmares

I woke up this morning from a nightmare. I rarely have nightmares. The thing that made last night's dream so bad was the environment. I can usually control my environment in dreams. I can control the weather, the location of items, day or night. But last night, I was at a loss.

It started like almost every other dream that I am able to remember. Nothing significant happening and then pieces start falling into place. As they fall into place, I mentally move them to my benefit.

Then I got blind-sided. I was at work with co-workers without faces and a female was chewing me up and down because I had not done enough research to answer a question. I had not planned for what I had not forecasted. Normally I can rely on my body language and people reading/reasoning skills to bring them off the ledge and come to a solution. But tonight (the dream takes place at night) is not the case. I begin looking around the room for my control point and I see nothing but the lady standing screaming at me at this point, and the table.

The lady is not a familiar face and is feared by many. I was at wits end when my now fired CIO walks into the white room. I am actually relieved to see him. When she sees him, she calms down from ear breaking screech to a low mumble. He can clearly see I am in some sort of pain and he pulls us both out of the stark white room and into the hallway...which is a dungeon. He walks her to one cell to cool down and takes me to another.

Believe it or not, even in the dungeon of rock and steel, I feel in danger. Danger. Not a feeling I would associate to the fact that I am rescued. But in the back of my head, I feel as if I have been saved from the public slamming and fed to the cobras. I again looked for my contact points. No moon, no insignia, no flower, no bird, no squirrel. All of them were missing. I was out of control, and it was getting worse.

It was the alarm clock that pulled me out.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Get a good alarm clock. I actually believe that your brain tries to sort things out in your head and if it stumbles across something it cannot resolve, that is when the nightmare begins. My nightmares involve being out of control of a situation more often than not.

I think that when people die in their sleep, it is due to dreams and nightmares. These people have lost control of their dreams and are caught in a no-win situation. Their body shuts down as a reboot and never comes back online.

Keep touch points. These are certain items that recur in dreams that will help you come out of it. If all else fails, buy a good alarm clock.

Did you know (I have had this and it is scary)...

Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (known as hypnagogic paralysis).

Decoration Day

Today is Memorial Day (Decoration Day). It is a day to honor the fallen soldiers who have protected our liberties in the United States and abroad. At 3:00 today, the National Moment of Rememberance takes place to pay quiet tribute to our soldiers past.

As a veteran, I have an attachment to Memorial Day. Veterans who have died for their country have a special place where honored warriors walk in peace and tranquility. These men and women gave up their lives to ensure the family and friends can live with the freedom and liberty they deserve.

For all of the military and civilian support that have died for this freedom, thank you.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). At 3:00PM local time, observe 5 minutes of silence. The following is a list of the United States Soldiers who have died since the last Memorial Day:

Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) was created the year after the Civil War ended. It was to "decorate" the graves of fallen Union soldiers.

Velcro Shoes and Baseball Caps

I fully admit I am not big in the fashion world. Fact is, I have some hard set rules that I rarely deviate from:
  1. Dark pants, light shirt
  2. Light shirt, dark pants
  3. Dark shirt, light pants
  4. When in work attire, wear a t-shirt (I have to dress business casual)
  5. Wear a belt when you have belt loops
  6. Black socks for business attire, white socks for casual

That is about it.

There are times when I see someone wearing what I feel is just not right, and are very tempted to walk up to them and ask them "What made you wear that?"

There is a new guy on the train who only rides in the morning with us. He wears white velcro sneakers. I didn't even know they made velcro sneakers in adult sizes, but sure enough, there they are. Is it possible that I am behind the times and that fashion has made a comeback from the 80s? I DO remember seeing bell bottom jeans not too long ago.

I haven't always been in need of the fashion police, back in the 80s when I was a teenager, I wore my zippered parachute pants, my Ocean Pacific t-shirts, and my something-written-in-Japanese bandana. I could moonwalk and breakdance with the best of them. Stop laughing. I know very well that anyone over the age of 30 reading this knows exactly how it was. The girls either dressed like valley girls, Madonna wannabes, Olivia Newton John's Physical (leg warmers and all). Even the younger readers I would bet know how to dance the Electric Slide or dressed like Salt n Pepa. For the older ones, all I have to say is Disco. So just sit there and read and quit judging me.

Today, I couldn't tell you what is in fashion. I guess rude and too small t-shirts are part of it. I love walking up to some little teenager (like my daughters) and reading their t-shirts out loud (sometimes very loud). If the letters are very small, sometimes you have to get close and then state with your best Bobcat Goldthwait voice "NICE RACK!"

Hey, if it is in fashion and has words, everyone should read it. Ladies, keep on buying, I will keep on reading even if my eyes are bad...real bad...I may have to get real close.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). At what point do you grow out of fashion? At what point does it become wrong to wear velcro tennis shoes? At what point does it make it right to wear velcro sneakers? If your mother or grandmother wore velcro sneakers, you would think it was an excellent idea instead of straining their muscles tying their shoes. Additionally, who would say anything? Are you going to say "Grandma, those shoes are off the hook for some dope chick looking for a ride."

At what point does a baseball cap being worn backward make you look like a middle aged man trying to look cool? There are so many fashion dos and don'ts I really can't keep track. Maybe someone should a book about it. Of course, if they did, it would be out of date by the time it was released. Also, who are these fashion police? I have seen the "fashion police" t-shirts, but I am unsure as to how they enforce anything. I ask the fashion police (the ones wearing the t-shirts) but they look at me all weird and think I am in need of some drugs.

Did you know...

According to market research firm NPD Fashionworld, fifty percent of all lingerie purchases are returned to the store.

Body and Brain

OK, That is bad.

The Pickled Liver Train Car was christened Thursday night by all of the founding members. There was an immense amount of alcohol and pickles consumed and everyone managed not to get kicked off the train. Overall, it was good. The conductor talked to the Mexican the following day and mentioned that he too was surprised we didn't get the boot.

Unfortunately for me, after the sixth Long Island Iced Tea and three Jell-O shooters, my body and my mind were not working well together. My brain was fully cognizant that I needed to walk. But when the brain started moving the torso, the legs did not appear to have received the message. It is either that, or they were on strike. The torso continued forward and the legs were left behind.

At this point, you really can't get the hands to help either. Your brain explains very loudly (at least I thought it was loud) that they need to be extended to prevent the impending fall. Nope, no luck. So as I lay there laughing at how funny it was that my appendages were striking against the brain I could only think of what other parts of my body were on strike.

Please don't let the rectum go on strike. As I am sure you all realize that the rectum rules the body. The following is a true story:

When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss.

The brain said, "I should be Boss because I control the all the body's responses and functions".

The feet said, "We should be Boss because we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go".

The hands said, "We should be Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money.

And so it went on and on, with the heart, the lungs, and the eyes, until finally the rectum spoke up.

All the parts laughed at the idea of the rectum being the Boss. So he goes on strike, blocks himself up, and refuses to work.

Within a short time, the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs begin to panic, and the brain fevered.

Eventually, they all decided that the rectum should be the Boss, so the motion was passed. All the other parts did all the work, while the Boss just sat and passed out the crap.

The Moral of the Story:

You don't need brains to be a Boss, any asshole will do.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). I should not be allowed to write when I am drunk. You see, Friday when I was at work, a co-worker mentioned to me that she was disappointed in my blog entry Thursday night.

"Huh?"

"I can't believe it took 15 minutes to write 3 lines."

"Huh?" At this point I was sure she was messing with my head to determine if I was still drunk from the night before. "I didn't write an entry last night," I confidently stated. Then the doubt came through and I had to go check.

OH MY GOD! I wrote a blog entry last night.

OK, That is bad.

Did you know...

If you hook Jell-O up to an EEG, it registers movements almost identical to a human adult's brain waves.

Too Drunk

So, today was the christening party. I am way to smashed to actually write one on my blog entries. BTW, it took me 15 minutes to write that.

Pics tomorrow.

New Underwear

I purchased new underwear last Saturday. They feel very comfy, almost to the point where walking in my underwear can make me (one sided grin) "happy." I purchased the Hanes classic boxer briefs with the tagless comfortsoft waistband. That comfortsoft waistband really makes a difference. Certain parts are not falling out of flaps because there are no flaps. I guess they finally figured out that with boxer briefs, nobody uses the flaps.

I am sure, that at this point many people are wondering why I am so infatuated with my new underwear.

I have gone through the cycle of underwear as many men (and women) have. I had whitey-tighties all through high school and into the Air Force. While in the Air Force though I was informed that I was to wear boxers. The first wife wanted to get pregnant and she believed that briefs lower the sperm count. OK...whatever...it is underwear.

That is until you actually wear boxers and the boys feel FREE! No more uncomfortable shifting and if you need to make use of the urinal, the flap actually makes sense. Of course there are some drawbacks. One is the stretch factor... If you are active, they tend to stretch out in certain places. Once this happens, you are doomed to the self-inflicted wedgie.

A self-inflicted wedgie is slightly different than the normal pull your friend's underwear over their shoulders type of wedgie. The self-inflicted wedgie tends to be that bunch of underwear that really has nowhere else to go but straight up the butt. I hate that. You can't sit there and pull it out without looking really stupid and blowing your image. So you sit there on the train thinking to yourself that if you can manage to take a "fart-walk" to the next car, you may be able to kill off two birds with one gall stone.

Of course, if someone realizes that you are walking around with a load of underwear squished between the butt cheeks, it could be worse...you could actually end up in an atomic wedgie. Once that happens, your waistband is surely ruined as is your hair. Your see, with the atomic wedgie, the waistband is wrapped over the head.

I have moved on from the boxers to the boxer briefs and now the improved tagless comfortsoft waistband boxer briefs. I like them and they don't bunch up.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Buy new underwear. I am absolutely positive that over 50% of the people out there are wearing underwear well beyond the life of the item. I am sure that the boxers some people are wearing on those trains are merely paper-thin sheers held together with duct tape.

I would bet that it is not only men that have this issue as well. How many women out there are wearing panties with the holes along the waistband. How about that bra that still "fits."

People are spending hundreds of dollars on the right shoes, or the nice jacket...but will not throw away the underwear they wore back in high school. Throw it away! I suggest buying the Hanes boxer briefs with the tagless comfortsoft waistband?

Did you know...

The thong accounts for 25% of the United States women's underwear market.

The Color Red

The Color Purple was a movie that will stand the test of time like other great movies such as Gone with the Wind, Singing in the Rain, and Dude, Where's my Car? With stars such as Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, everyone anxiously anticipated the release.

Friday, I saw the movie The DaVinci Code. The problem is, I read the book. Granted, the movie and the book were very much alike, but in my honest opinion, I would give it no better than a "C." It was mostly the acting. My problem is, the book gave me a very good visual as to who the main characters were and how they interacted. Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou did not fit. It really appeared they were just saying the words as they were written and there wasn't any real acting. It was like they stood there and read a book. Very disappointing. That was my Friday (well, that and drinking profusely).

Saturday, I shopped for some clothes and spent the afternoon washing and waxing my truck in the beautiful sunshine.

Sunday, I planted my fifty shrubs to create my new hedge for cartoon animals to jump over, and I planted some trees. This required me to spend the entire day outside with the bugs in the sun. Now I am red.

Red.

There are plenty of things to wonder about in this world but one that lies close to my heart is "red." Redskin, redneck, red-handed...red. Why are Natives considered redskins? Why the big controversy about the Washington Redskins? Believe it or not...I have answers.

Natives were given the color red not as an offensive descriptor, but as a designator. Before George Washington was a glimmer in his Mom's eye, a man named Samuel Smith wrote some letters about his interactions with the Native tribes and the fear that surrounded the communities. This fear was stirred by stories of attacks by the "Red Skin men." This however is the first instance recorded of the term and was not seen or heard used again for another 26 years.

It was actually a Taensa Chief that told a story to a French priest that started with (I am paraphrasing of course) "A black man, a white man and a red man looking at a pile of horse dung..." You see, the Taensa Tribe refer to themselves as "Red Men" in their own language. Townspeople all over began referring to Natives as Red and later Redskins.(ref)

The Washington Redskins football team also earned the name honestly. The team was originally known as the Boston Braves, but changed to the Boston Redskins when they left Braves field for Fenway Park. The name "Redskins" was chosen to honor the team's coach, William "Lone Star" Dietz, whose mother was Sioux. In 1937 the team moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Redskins. (ref)

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Wear sunscreen. I spent one and a half full days out in the sun washing trucks and planting shrubs. I now feel the pain of red skin all over this Redskin. I should have thought about it earlier, but it was such a nice day and dipping myself in a vat of sunscreen didn't hit the radar.

I should have listened to Baz Luhrman. "Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of 2006...Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience."

Did you know...

During sunrise and sunset the distance that the light has to travel from the Sun to an observer is at its greatest. This means the a large amount of blue and violet light has been scattered by the atmosphere so the light that is received by an observer is mostly of a longer wavelength and therefore appears to be red.

The "Pickled Liver"

I started riding the train to and from work at the beginning of the year. There are a half dozen things I have found to be enjoyable and for posterity I will annotate them here.
  1. The relaxing ride in and out helps me ramp up and burn down from my job. I find that when I was driving in, I was worn out by the time I reached the office. The traffic in the Chicagoland area will drain all of your well-being out of you.
  2. I have found community. Granted, it is a community that only lasts 2 hours per day, but I look forward to those 2 hours. It is such a tight knit and diverse group that we have made plans for a train outing. Most of us are going to a White Sox game together in June.
  3. I have new friends. I consider the people I ride the train with my friends. Being more social and doing new things to make friends was actually one of my New Years resolutions. So to actually be able to follow up and follow through on that is fantastic.
  4. I learn. I learn from the very diverse group that no matter what the job, no matter what the income bracket, no matter what the upbringing, people can be friends and get along. I wish the rest of the United States could take the train...or maybe the President...well, maybe not.
  5. We are uninhibited. Politically correct is NOT a train requirement or option. Sometimes, it is just best if people just speak their mind in the words they want. Without speaking truthfully, we all appear to be hiding something. Without speaking truthfully, we never learn. The Midget Porn Star and the Banker are the most vocal and least politically correct people on the train. I admire their lack of boundaries.
  6. I drink considerably more now that I ride the train. Before riding the train, I would have a drink about once every 4 to 5 months. Now, it is at least a weekly occurance. I have found that I am OK with that. Although yesterday, my intake was considerably more than usual. I managed to become totally fit shaced. Sully was nice enough to drive the Mexican and I home.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Go to the nearest train station and take a ride. Someone should make this a form of therapy. I know by riding the train, I personally have worked through a lot of my own issues (such as being a social introvert) and had fun doing so. I know that I have grown over the past few months. I am willing to get out and do things by myself again like bowl or attend a movie. I have the social self confidence to explore again.

Granted, I have managed to begin the liver pickling process, but I figure what better group to be laid up in a hospital with than this? Therfore, I hereby christen car 7475 "The Pickled Liver" in honor of all pickled livers the car has created. You only live once. Live to the highest potency...I mean potential.

Forecasting the Weather

Today was one of those very rainy days except for when I was outside. We have this running joke on the train about me and the weather. You see, the secretary carries an umbrella when she thinks it is going to rain (today for instance). Here is how the conversations usually run...

Secretary: It is suppose to rain today.

Me: You won't need your umbrella today.

Secretary: The weatherman says we will get rain.

Me: You won't need the umbrella.

Later in the day, it started pouring down rain. The thunderstorm was tearing up roads and cats and dogs were mating in the streets. It was terrible. I then received an email from the Secretary informing me that it is raining. I again affirmed, she will not need an umbrella.

She made it to the train dry and never needing the umbrella. While on the train, she received a call from her son telling her that the cats and dogs were mating together at her home as well.

I informed her she would not need an umbrella...and she didn't.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Who really knows about the weather? Do you think the meteorologist really have ANY idea as to what they are forecasting?

Take for instance this...

The Blackfeet asked their Chief in autumn, if the winter was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing the answer, the chief replies that the winter was going to be cold and that the members of the village were to collect wood to be prepared.

Being a good leader, he then went to the nearest phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is this winter to be cold?" The man on the phone responded, "This winter was going to be quite cold indeed."

So the Chief went back to speed up his people to collect even more wood to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again, "Is it going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes," the man replied, "its going to be a very cold winter."

So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again and asks "Are you absolutely sure, that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely" the man replies, "the Blackfeet are collecting wood like crazy!"

So who are you going to trust? A Native or someone who watches the Native to determine the weather? Meteorologist are second hand information.

By the way...No need for an umbrella tomorrow.

Believed to be the rainiest place in the United States, Seattle averages 158 days of rain per year. The place that has the most rainy days per year is Mount Wai-'ale'ale on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It has up to 350 rainy days annually.

Lost without my Muse

The Queen has left to visit her cousin. I must admit, when I was taking her to the airport, I was looking forward to a little time to myself. Little did I know, a little time was about 10 minutes. I had just hit the tollway to head back home when I was already missing her. There has been many times when I would hear a teenager walking up the stairs and I would think, "here she comes."

I have been with the Queen for eight years. Even after eight years, when I know she is coming up the stairs, my pulse races, my sense of smell increases, and I have flashbacks of our first date, our wedding day and when she talked to the palm trees on her 21st birthday. I didn't sleep at all last night.

The Queen has managed to raise our daughters (ours because she inherited them at a very young age) with all of the love and compassion any person can give. While having dinner with the younger daughter, I asked her if she remembers her Mother. Her reply to me was "The Queen IS my mother."

We all miss her.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). I will be taking a trip to Seattle in July. Why? Well, I had a free ticket and it expired on the same day as the Queen's flight to the south. I really had no idea where to go and when, so I decided that since it has been forever since I have been to Washington, it was time to revisit it.

I have plans when I get there...just to be there. I live for the experience (good or bad). You have to live for the experience. My Queen is living for her experience. I am living for her experience. I am learning who I am, what I miss, what we miss and I am growing because of it.

May your life be full of experiences.

The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from an old English law which stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

Happy Mother's Day

Today is another made up holiday to thank and take a step back to appreciate our Mothers. There are some people who feel thhis holiday is just another reason to make Hallmark purchases and give a boost to the chocolate economy. Is it? Is it really?

Let's take a moment to really think about all the time and effort our Mothers put into raising our children. Having been a child at one time, my Mother has managed to not only keep me alive...but show me how to live. My Mother raised me alone since the passing of my Father when I was six. She provided income, housing, clothing, moral support, food, comfort, and my father figure. She was truly an incredible woman and a pillar in the community. Adding to this, she taught me that you only live once, so make the very best of it while being the best you can be.

I was a terrible child at times. I have caught the detached garage on fire (I had to find out WHY the aerosol cans weren't suppose to be near flame...let alone the burn barrel) and I had far too many parties in the house when she was out of town. I have "flashed" the local cops (with my new camera strobe) and have driven my car without lights in the dark to avoid a ticket. When I broke the Kentucky Fried Chicken sign across the street and the police again arrived on my doorstep, my Mother asked "what this time?" After each known incident, I was disciplined.

Every time though, I knew I was loved.

I miss my Mother. May she rest in peace.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Happy Mother's Day. You may be at odds with your Mother, but you need to understand that being a Mother is the most thankless, underpaid job on Earth. There is never a vacation for being a Mother. They are not permitted to have sick days. Stay at home Mother's earn about half of the wage earners pay and work 24 hours a day, 365 1/4 days a year.

So if someone commercial or otherwise wants to make a holiday that only happens one day each year to celebrate Mothers. I am all for it. For all of you Mothers out there...

Thank you.

Dedicated to my Mother (February 3, 1927-December 3, 2003).

For her and every other Mother my gift is the origin of Mother's Day.(ref)

Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870, as a call for peace and disarmament. An excerpt follows:

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.
"Blood does not wipe our dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...

Did you know...

Julia Ward Howe wrote the Battle Hymm of the Republic and was a staunch fighter for women's rights. She staged an unusual protest for peace in Boston, by celebrating a special day for mothers. Julia wanted to call attention to the need for peace by pointing out mothers who were left alone in the world without their sons and husbands after the bloody Franco-Prussian War.

This Blog has been Interrupted

I will be taking a short break from my blog to concentrate on a little endeavor. I am making an attempt to write a story. I am not sure as to the outcome or even the plot line. This will be more of a free flowing set of words on "paper." Just a way for me to be creative.

So, if you are bored out of your mind and surfing the world for anything and everything, you can read the following:

http://techno-underground.blogspot.com/

If you have comments about the story, please post them here. I will be shutting down all comments on the other blog.

Bothered by my own Blog...

I have offended someone. In my Ooogies post, I wrote about Naked Man and how his mannerisms bothered me. Using creative description, I wrote that he was "about 6 feet 3 inches and weighs about 375 pounds." Apparently I was wrong about his weight. My attempt to make him appear intimidating has come back to bite me on the arse.

I thought the point of my blog entry was fairly clear that you can't judge a book or person by it's cover. But that point apparently was lost in the details. Naked Man has taken offense to the entry and has moved to a different train car. This really bothers me. In my attempt to educate and use imagery, I have made a critical mistake. I have offended someone.

I apologize.

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Watch what you say (or type). I have always thought of myself as aware of other people and their feelings. Now it is time for me to be educated. I will have to seriously think about my blog and how it can affect people.

Almost Green

What is it with the people’s obsession with grass? My neighbor is so compulsive with his yard that he will complain to the Association if I have anything “unsightly” in my yard. He uses all four chemical treatments every year and mows about twice a week because it grows so fast. You know it is bad when the siding is falling off his house…but he is out there with his fingernail clippers trimming his shrubbery (thinking Monte Python… SHRUBBERY?!).

As for me, if I never have to mow my lawn all year, I am a happy camper. Last year, it was so dry, the lawn only had to be mowed five times the entire year. This year, it has a green tint and I have yet to mow it. I like this. I like having time for myself and family on the weekend instead of my yard.

We also have to endure an Association requirement of no higher than a four foot fence. What exactly is a four foot high fence going to do for me? The large dogs I would like to keep out can jump over it. If someone came to a party at my house and decided to strip naked in my yard, there wouldn’t be any privacy. Honestly, I really don’t want to see my neighbors house.

But because I constantly think outside the box, I came up with a solution that falls within the Assholciation rules while giving me the security and privacy I desire. I am planting a privet hedge. At maturity, it can grow to 12’ high and will deter nearly every animal including humans. This also means I don’t have to fall within the “fence border” requirements. Plants can be planted anywhere except for up their… nose.

I have ordered 50 plants that should pretty much cover both sides and the back of my lot. What schmuck would make a rule that your fence can only be four feet in the first place?

This brings me to my point (as I almost always have one). Use the rules against them. I am constantly faced with stupid rules. I am constantly faced with stupid situations. So when the telemarketer calls you because you are already a customer of the parent company (which they are allowed to do even if you are on the do-not-call list), use their own rules against them. Ask them for their name and telemarketing number. Inform them that you are busy right now and will have to call them back.

Then, let 200 of your friends know WHEN to call the number back and call back all at the same time requesting lengthy information and never ever buy anything. What this does is ties up all of their marketing personnel with calls and they never have a chance to call out to other people and make the sale. If your intention is to shut them down because they just WON’T stop calling, publish the information and have everyone call at least once a day until the phone just stops being answered.

There is nothing wrong, or illegal about doing any of these scenarios. You are just playing by their rules. What would not be playing by their rules is if the next time you fill out one of those forms in the malls for a free vacation, TV, or car, you use the telemarketers number that keeps calling you in the first place.

Did you know…

Eleven top executives of the Direct Marketing Association (the telemarketers' group that is trying to kill the federal "Do Not Call" list) have registered for the list themselves.
